ROH Women's World Champion Mercedes Martinez has had several experiences in the world of pro wrestling during her 22-year career. Martinez has battled several times in independent federations and WWE while now under contract with AEW through a partnership with Ring of Honor.
On the Complex Unsanctioned podcast, Martinez talked about her about the creative freedom she has in AEW and also about the difference between old WWE and AEW Superstars. She also talked about her relationship with Tony Khan.
New details on Mercedes Martinez
On Tony Khan, Mercedes Martinez stated: "I can text him anytime, when I want, to ask him anything. If I have ideas or anything, he's always available to talk. He's a really busy man but he's always ready for anything for all of us.
This one. I think it's one of the biggest differences between WWE and AEW. He's a very positive one for everyone here. He's the boss, an amazing man who also makes the decisions. The fact that he listens to his concerns and whatever proposals you have for the show, it's really great.
There are a lot of moving parts here at AEW, but Tony Khan is an open ear to everything. I love that creative freedom that I have here, to move forward in the stories as I see fit." On the other AEW female fighters: "I'm really good here.
At the end of the day, everyone is there to make sure the women's division is the best it can be. We always try to do our best and in the best way too." Mercedes Martinez praised the AEW women's locker room, stating that 90% of senior women are faces known to her thanks to independent federations.
For her, it's like AEW is a bit like a big family. Mercedes Martinez won the ROH women's title at Interim during the 1st April Supercard of Honor. Martinez then became the definitive ROH champion by beating Deonna Purrazzo, in the May 4th edition of AEW Dynamite.
While on an episode of the Monday Mailbag with Mike Chioda, the former WWE official expressed his shock. While he knew Shawn Michaels would do whatever he wanted, he was confused about what was going on. “I remember during that match thinking holy s**t, he’s selling his a** off for f***ing Hogan.
And then I’m like wait a minute, is he f***ing around here? Knowing Shawn, sometimes he’ll do whatever he wants to do. I’m sure he got paid huge for it but I just didn’t know which way Vince was going with Shawn at that point."
