AEW's highly anticipated pay-per-view, Double or Nothing, has achieved a comparable buy rate to the company's Revolution pay-per-view held in March. Esteemed wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, known for his insights in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, estimates that the event garnered between 130,000 and 135,000 buys.
While this figure aligns with Revolution's buy rate, it marks a noticeable decline from last year's Double or Nothing, which AEW President Tony Khan estimated to have achieved 155,000 buys. Accompanying the buy rate estimation, Meltzer also provided attendance figures for the show, revealing that 10,550 enthusiastic fans were in attendance.
Surprisingly, despite a significant reduction in attendees compared to the previous year, the gate revenue remained strikingly close to last year's event. This outcome can be attributed to the implementation of higher ticket prices for this year's extravaganza.
CM Punk's AEW Return: Impact on PPV Sales?
As fans eagerly await CM Punk's highly anticipated return to AEW, which has now been officially confirmed and is just a couple of weeks away, the question arises as to whether the former AEW World Champion's presence will substantially impact PPV sales.
CM Punk's in-ring return occurred at the All Out 2021 PPV, which generated the highest number of PPV buys in AEW's history. AEW's next pay-per-view will be an inter-promotional spectacle involving New Japan Pro-Wrestling, known as the Forbidden Door event.
While the card's specifics have yet to be revealed, tantalizing teasers have left fans buzzing with anticipation. Several AEW talents are slated to participate in this Sunday's NJPW Dominion event. The formidable alliance of Jon Moxley, representing Blackpool Combat Club, and Claudio Castagnoli will join forces with Shota Umino to challenge Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tomohiro Ishii for the highly coveted NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship.
As the wrestling world continues to embrace the ongoing excitement surrounding AEW, all eyes are on Double or Nothing and its potential to captivate audiences with its outstanding lineup and enthralling storylines.
