In a captivating turn of events, renowned professional wrestler CM Punk has reportedly pitched himself as a participant in the forthcoming AEW Blood & Guts Match. Slated for July 19th on Dynamite, emanating from Boston, this will be the third AEW Blood & Guts Match.
Currently, The Elite team boasts four wrestlers - Kenny Omega, Adam Page, and brothers Matt and Nick Jackson, while the Blackpool Combat Club (BCC) also has its four - Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, and Konosuke Takeshita.
Blood & Guts: High-Stakes Showdown
AEW's Blood & Guts match, reminiscent of the iconic WarGames concept from the 1980s and 1990s in the NWA/WCW era, is a high-stakes showdown. It's held in a dual ring encapsulated by a cage, and typically involves ten wrestlers, with two commencing the brawl and others joining at subsequent intervals.
However, the win condition only applies after every competitor has entered the ring. This year’s Blood & Guts match comes with its share of challenges due to injury issues. Bryan Danielson of the BCC cannot compete due to a broken arm.
On The Elite's side, Eddie Kingston would have been an asset, but his commitments to the NJPW G1 Climax tournament in Japan prevent his participation. It's anticipated that The Elite will include their comrade, Japanese wrestling legend and former IWGP World Champion, Kota Ibushi, as their fifth member.
Ibushi and Omega were previously paired in a formidable tag team, The Golden Lovers. The wrestling world is abuzz with rumors of who might complete the BCC’s roster. It's been reported by Fightful Select that CM Punk has volunteered to join the Blood & Guts match.
Despite his strained relationship with The Elite since a locker room altercation last September at All Out, Punk, it seems, is eager to participate. This information, originally surfaced by Voices of Wrestling and later confirmed by Fightful, suggests that CM Punk’s proposal might have been somewhat tongue-in-cheek, not genuinely expecting acceptance.
After all, his desire to engage with The Elite has been met with clear resistance, indicative of lingering animosity. According to Fightful, their source stated that “neither team would want him”, although Jon Moxley didn't seem against the idea of CM Punk's involvement.
As the wrestling world awaits confirmation, Fightful concludes that the teams for the imminent Blood & Guts match have already been decided, adding another layer of suspense to the much-anticipated event.
