Cody Rhodes, a name synonymous with professional wrestling, opened up about his departure from All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and his return to WWE in a newly released two-hour Peacock documentary covering his life and career.

It provides fans an in-depth look into the life of a wrestler who has been in the industry for more than a decade. In a candid and reflective manner, the documentary covered Rhodes's career from 2006 to 2016 in WWE, followed by his three-year contract with AEW, which expired early in 2022.

It was at this point that WWE, under the guidance of Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard, reengaged Cody, leading to his sensational return.

Rhodes's Reason for Leaving AEW

Rhodes's comments about his departure from AEW were particularly revealing.

“I didn’t leave AEW because of money, and I didn’t leave AEW because of other talents. I left AEW because of a personal issue. That’s it,” he said. While the exact nature of the personal issue remains undisclosed, it's clear that his exit from AEW was not a struggle for him.

Cody's ultimate dream, one fueled by images of his legendary father Dusty Rhodes, is to win the WWE Championship. Though Dusty was never able to clinch the title, Cody plans to change that narrative and bring the championship home.

During an interview with GQ, Rhodes was further asked about his decision to leave AEW, a company he helped found. His reply was as direct as it was unexpected: “No, it was the easiest thing I ever did. And it’s because I had a personal issue that I wasn’t going through, over, or around.

I was just going to steer clear of it”. Cody expressed gratitude for his time in AEW, looking back with satisfaction and pride. But for him, the decision to move on was uncomplicated, not marred by negativity, but driven by a need to face fresh challenges and pursue new opportunities, both for himself and his wife, Brandi Rhodes, a former AEW executive.

Interestingly, Rhodes also revealed in other interviews that he never wanted to leave WWE in the first place. The departure, though necessary at that time in his career, seems to have come full circle with his return. Cody Rhodes’s return to WWE is being marked with anticipation as fans look forward to his SummerSlam showdown with “The Beast” Brock Lesnar this Saturday in Detroit.

It's a pivotal moment for Rhodes, as he steps back into the WWE ring with both his legacy and future in professional wrestling hanging in the balance.
