In a seismic shift that has sent shockwaves through the wrestling world, Adam Copeland, better known as WWE Hall of Famer Edge, made his unexpected AEW debut at the AEW WrestleDream event earlier this month. The news left fans and industry insiders alike questioning Copeland's loyalty to WWE, where he had spent over 25 years building his legacy.

Among those stunned by the move was Rey Mysterio, a 2023 WWE Hall of Famer and current US Champion on the Smackdown brand. Mysterio and Copeland have a storied history, having been both partners and opponents during their WWE tenures.

They were part of the iconic Smackdown Six and even held the WWE Tag Team Titles back in November 2002. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, Mysterio expressed his astonishment. "I was shocked. We had just spoken a week before that.

We never had the time to even talk about what was next," he said. Mysterio added that he learned of Copeland's AEW roster inclusion through social media, stating, "Next thing you know, it was on social media the following day.

'Did you see?' 'No, what happened.' They showed me his Edge AEW debut. 'Wow, I didn't see that coming.' " Mysterio, who is known for his close relationship with Copeland, emphasized that while the move was surprising, it was ultimately Copeland's decision.

"It’s always good to have an option. At the end of the day, that was his decision. That’s what made him feel good, take it," Mysterio said.

Adam Copeland Career Crossroads

Adam Copeland's age and stage in his career also make this a significant move.

With both wrestlers contemplating retirement in the next few years, Copeland's switch to AEW could be one of his final acts in professional wrestling. His decision also raises questions about what other WWE talents might be considering similar moves, especially given the recent AEW signings like Christian Cage.

Helwani mentioned he thought Adam Copeland would be a WWE lifer, to which Mysterio agreed, "Yes, I think that’s why it shocked so much. He was a home guy." Copeland's move to AEW not only impacts the WWE landscape but also his personal life, including relationships with his kids, his dog, and his wife, as he's Adam Copeland married.

It also opens up new opportunities for him as Adam Copeland, the actor, and adds another chapter to the Adam Edge Copeland news saga.
