In late 2018, Tony Khan, who is a life-long avid fan of professional wrestling, filed for several trademarks for a new venture that was shortly thereafter confirmed to be a new professional wrestling promotion, All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
The company then was officially announced on January 1, 2019, along with its very first event, Double or Nothing, which took place on May 25, 2019 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tony Khan serves as the lead executive figure for the newly founded wrestling promotion drawing from his experience in management as a business executive of sports franchises.
Speaking with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Khan commented on Bret Hart doing the segment at 'Double or Nothing': “He was great to work with … It just felt right [to get him involved]. To be honest, if you want to hear the story, I was on the phone with Cody one night.
And this was like a segment he was working on, the title segment. And you saw what it eventually became, where my friend Jack Whitehall introduces Bret Hart. Bret Hart — the best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be — came out. Bret is an all-time great legend of wrestling. And to me, there was not anybody better for this than him”.
