In the dynamic world of professional wrestling, the tag team duo of Top Flight, composed of brothers Darius and Dante Martin, has rapidly ascended to prominence within both All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Ring of Honor's (ROH) tag team divisions.
Their journey to AEW fame, however, was anything but conventional, beginning with a simple, yet audacious email sent by Darius Martin to the company's Executive Vice Presidents (EVPs). Darius Martin, while speaking on the popular wrestling podcast "Talk Is Jericho," shared an intriguing tale of determination and passion.
"It was a mix of admiration and ambition," he explained. "I was genuinely fascinated by AEW's approach to wrestling - they offered something refreshingly different. So, I reached out, hoping to get me and my brother a shot." He included a highlight reel in his email, showcasing their high-flying in-ring abilities, a move that remarkably caught the attention of AEW's Matt Jackson.
Jackson's response, expressing interest in the duo, was a pivotal moment for the Martin brothers. This opportunity led to their first match against Stu Grayson and Evil Uno. The Martins' impressive performance in AEW's "Dark" matches and their televised bout against The Young Bucks solidified their potential in the eyes of AEW's decision-makers.
Unexpected Signing Twist
However, it was their post-match storyline with The Hybrid 2 (TH2) that unexpectedly set the stage for their official signing. Amidst the unique circumstances posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the brothers found themselves in the audience, adhering to AEW's adapted format.
It was during this time that AEW President Tony Khan, through the public address system, summoned them backstage - a moment Darius initially misinterpreted. "We thought it was just a logistical move, to keep us out of TH2's camera shot," Darius recalled.
"But to our surprise, we were greeted by Christopher Daniels, who broke the incredible news of our signing and our upcoming storyline involvement." This unexpected journey from a hopeful email to a key storyline on national television encapsulates the unpredictable and exhilarating nature of professional wrestling. The Martins' story is a testament to perseverance and the willingness to seize opportunities.
