There are a few former WWE professional wrestlers that are doing very well on the indie circuit. One of them is Matt Cardona. Matt was known as Zack Ryder in the WWE, and he was part of some very important storylines in the WWE.

He was in a storyline that involved John Cena at one point. However, Zack could never get as over with the fans as WWE wanted.

Due to that reason, Matt eventually had to leave the WWE as he believed he wasn’t getting enough time on TV as he thought he deserved.

He was also not part of any main event storyline and he believed he would do better on the indie circuit. Matt is known for being an indie star, but he made a few appearances for AEW as well. Quite recently, he wrestled WWE Hall of Famer, Adam Copeland (formerly known as Edge) on AEW Dynamite.

He answered Adam’s TNT Title Open Challenge. Matt revealed on social media that he always wanted to wrestle Adam, and it was the match that he had been dreaming for years. He also revealed that he enjoyed wrestling Adam, who was at one time one of the most popular stars that the WWE had.

"This is literally my dream match and I'm not even talking about our history...He taught me everything I know in this business, he saved my career [but] I'm talking pre me even being a pro wrestler," Cardona gushed. "Looking up to Adam, looking up to [Christian Cage], those were the guys that when they made it to the top of this business, I though 'Maybe someone like me can.'

Having this match, I never thought it was gonna happen. Adam had to retired. He comes back, we're not in the same company, but 'Alwayz Ready,' it's not just a catchphrase, it's how I live my life." He also stated that he learned a lot from Adam, even though Adam never taught him formally.

Matt still watches Adam from time to time to learn things from him, which Adam himself is not aware of. "He's the rated R superstar but because of what he taught me, I'm the self-made superstar," Cardona said. Matt has challenged Adam to a rematch which will take place at Long Island at some point. We last saw Matt wrestle for AEW in 2022 during the pandemic era where he was signed on a per-appearance deal.
