On January 8, 2019, Chris Jericho made a surprise appearance at a media event organized by the upstart All Elite Wrestling (AEW) promotion, where he announced his allegiance with the company. Shortly after the appearance, Jericho was filmed signing a full-time performers three-year contract with AEW and shaking hands with the company's President Tony Khan.
Jericho made his debut at the promotion's inaugural event Double or Nothing, defeating Kenny Omega in the main event and earning a future AEW World Championship match against "Hangman" Adam Page at All Out to determine the inaugural champion.
At All Out, Jericho defeated Page to become the inaugural AEW World Champion. During a recent interview, the Canadian superstar commented on WWE sending out a congratulatory message to AEW: “Because they’re embarrassed.
I know how they work. And the fact is, I haven’t seen the actual rating but I’m assuming they know how it is, and I think we probably kicked their ass. They started this. Everything that they’ve done has been a reactionary move to us.
We’re not in a war with anybody besides ourselves. I don’t care if you resurrect John and George and it’s the reunion of the Beatles at the Super Bowl or whatever. All that matters is our show. You can put anything up against us, and we can’t compete with that. We can compete with what we’re doing”.
