Chris Jericho speaks about the TNT Championship Tournament

Chris Jericho returned to WWE in the SmackDown episode of July 25th asking for a match for the United States Championship from champion Kevin Owens; since AJ Styles, the previous champion, also wanted a rematch, General Manager Shane McMahon sanctioned a titled Triple Threat match, which was however won by AJ Styles.

Among other accolades within the WWF/WWE, Jericho has won the Undisputed WWF Championship once, the WCW/World Championship twice, the World Heavyweight Championship three times, and the WWE Intercontinental Championship a record nine times.

Jericho is the ninth Triple Crown Champion, as well as the fourth Grand Slam Champion in history. In addition, he was the 2008 Superstar of the Year Slammy Award winner and (along with Big Show as Jeri-Show) won the 2009 Tag Team of the Year Slammy Award—making him the only winner of both Superstar and Tag Team of the Year.

After his departure from WWE in 2018, Jericho signed with NJPW, where he became a one-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion, becoming the first man to have held both the WWE and IWGP Intercontinental Championships. During a recent interview with Newsweek, the Canadian superstar spoke about the TNT Championship Tournament: “I think it’s good to have a purpose and every show needs to have a purpose.

The more focus you can give to each show, the more interesting it becomes to watch”. This focus is greatly needed right now as they’ve had a minimal roster to work with and their current AEW World Champion Jon Moxley resides in Las Vegas and hasn’t been available for the tapings.

So I think we’ve done it the right way and we’ve got a lot of guys that will be taking perfect advantage of this. You’ve got a lot of guys that have really gone out of their way to put on a great show. Now we’re left with Cody and Darby Allen, and Lance Archer and Dustin Rhodes, and they’re all vying for the chance to show how great they are.

No matter which combination of those guys that it is, I expect nothing but two great matches tonight on Dynamite, and then another classic at the PPV”.
