For the fourth consecutive year, NXT will present the special TakeOver: War Games, where the acclaimed two-ring match will once again delight fans of the discipline. Also this year there will be two War Games and the first of these will see the Undisputed Era and the new stable led by Pat McAfee challenge each other.
It all started with the rivalry between McAfee and the leader of the Undisputed Era, Adam Cole; despite the latter having emerged victorious from their direct confrontation at NXT TakeOver: XXX, McAfee is back to target the Undisputed Era aided by his new allies Pete Dunne and the new duo champions Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan.
After a period of absolute domination over NXT, Pat McAfee's group found itself hampered by the return of the Undisputed Era, with its members ready to take their revenge. The tension between the two groups has reached an all-time high, so William Regal couldn't help but announce the final settlement within the War Games.
The second War Games Match will see the team of Shotzi Blackheart and that of Candice LeRae opposed. The rivalry between these two athletes escalated at Halloween Havoc, when Shotzi Blackheart prevented Candice LeRae from defeating Io Shirai and taking the NXT Women's Championship.
As revenge, Candice destroyed Shotzi's tank and declared war on it. At the time of composing the two teams, Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzales immediately allied themselves with Candice LeRae and Toni Storm was added to them by surprise after the betrayal against her friend Ember Moon.
Eventually, Ember Moon herself, Rhea Ripley and champion Io Shirai decided to side in Shotzi Blackheart's favor following several attacks by the heel team.
Update on NXT TakeOver: War Games
The NXT North American Championship scene was completely turned upside down by Leon Ruff's surprising title win.
The young fighter defeated Johnny Gargano in a real upset also thanks to the distractions of Damian Priest, who had recently lost the same title against Gargano at Halloween Havoc. Leon Ruff soon realized he had a lot to prove to be recognized as a legitimate and respectful champion, so he decided to defend the belt against anyone, sparking the ire of both Johnny Gargano and Damian Priest after the champion refused Priest's aid in his fight against Johnny Wrestling.
These three fighters will compete in a triple threat match and the North American title will be up for grabs. Finally Cameron Grimes and Dexter Lumis will end their cartoon rivalry in a Strap Match, after weeks and weeks in which Lumis has literally persecuted a terrified Cameron Grimes, and Timothy Thatcher will take up the challenge thrown at him by Tommaso Ciampa.
