In the past, we have seen a number of WWE wrestlers leave the WWE to start wrestling on the indie circuit. Most of the time, these wrestlers leave the WWE as they do not like the way the WWE creative team handles them. Other times, they leave because they do not get enough TV time.

Some don’t fit in the culture, or do not like the person that is leading the company.

Even though some popular former WWE stars can join AEW these days, some choose to stay on the indie circuit where they are more well-known and have creative control.

Matt Cardona is one of them. As Zack Ryder in the WWE, he was part of some interesting storylines, including one involving John Cena. However, he wasn’t being pushed by the WWE as much as he would have liked and left the company.

He made a few appearances for AEW, but he is not a full-time AEW wrestler. His last appearance in AEW saw him wrestle WWE Hall of Famer, Adam Copeland, who was known as Edge in the WWE. Matt is one of the most popular indie wrestlers in the world right now.

He recently spoke about his long-term career goals. Matt has wrestled for GCW, MLW, and WSW. He failed to win the TNT title from Adam Copeland in his most recent match against him at AEW. In Wrestling with Freddie, he spoke about his desire to fight at WWE WrestleMania one last time.

"This has been the most successful I've been in my career, but I would be lying if I said I never wanted to wrestle at Madison Square Garden again or WrestleMania again and a few months ago, I had that match on AEW against Adam Copeland, Edge, and just man I have goosebumps right now thinking about it...

If Tony Khan called me or Triple H, I would of course have a conversation, but like I don't want to be back to be back." Matt stated that he just doesn’t want to be part of another roster anymore. He is used to being a role player these days but he does not want to finish his career in GCW, which is a relatively small brand, when compared to WWE or AEW.

Matt is on the shelf these days as he turn a pectoral muscle in April. He is the General Manager of GCW right now and doesn’t wrestle.
