Finn Balor recalls his storyline with Brock Lesnar

Finn Balor caused a stir when in 2019 he decided to leave the WWE main roster to return to NXT. The Irish superstar, who will challenge Karrion Kross for the title of NXT champion this week, was also the first holder of the WWE Universal Champion in the history of the Stamford company.

Speaking on the podcast 'Out of Character' hosted by Ryan Satin, Balor recalled his match against Brock Lesnar which took place at the Royal Rumble in 2019. Braun Strowman was supposed to be the opponent of the Beast, before being replaced for reasons never well clarified.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, it was Lesnar who asked the management to be able to clash with Finn for the first time ever.

“I don't know exactly how things went, I have to be honest.

I have heard so many rumors about it,” admitted Finn Balor. “We met in New Japan a long time ago, I was a rookie at the time, while he was the heavyweight champion. I've always had a great relationship with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman, so it's possible they've advanced my candidacy.

I cannot give a certain answer, nor illustrate what were the modalities that led to that choice. I showed up there one day and they told me I was going to feud with Brock. I just thought it was fantastic,” he said. The match - which lasted eight minutes - was considered one of the most spectacular of the entire pay-per-view.

Victory went to Lesnar, who subdued Balor with a devastating Kimura Lock. “In some ways, I consider it one of the favorite moments of my entire career. The challenge was short but very intense, I don't even know how to explain it.

I had worked so hard to get ready that I felt completely at ease in the ring, there were no obstacles or distractions. I was able to show everything I had learned over the years,” he commented. Brock Lesnar's contract with WWE expired in August last year.

Over the last year, Finn Balor has mostly been involved in NXT Championship storylines. He is currently preparing to challenge Karrion Kross for the NXT Championship on this week’s episode of NXT. One month after debuting on RAW, Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2016 to win the newly introduced Universal Championship.

The Irishman suffered a serious shoulder during the match, meaning he had to relinquish the title after just one day. Balor’s only other title reigns on WWE’s main roster came in 2019 when he won the Intercontinental Championship twice from Bobby Lashley.
