On Friday, 16th July, WWE was able to host its first live show in over a year and a half. Fans attending the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas made the atmosphere special in what was the last episode of SmackDown before Money in the Bank.
The Stamford-based federation hoped to continue on this path again on Sunday, when one of the most anticipated pay-per-views on the calendar will be staged. Despite having continued the shows thanks to the ThunderDome gimmick, Vince McMahon's company also suffered the severe effects of the global pandemic, having been forced to release about 30 superstars in 2021 alone.
In a recent interview with CBS Sports, current Universal Champion Roman Reigns expressed his feelings after receiving fan affection for the first time in a long time. “I'd say we were all pretty excited. Each of us had to answer a series of questions internally before going on stage" - said the 'Tribal Chief'
Roman Reigns will challenge Edge at Money in the Bank
"As for the possibility of returning to perform in front of a live audience and creating a unique atmosphere, it is something that everyone in the locker room was eagerly awaiting.
We were happy during the ThunderDome era, because it gave us the opportunity to continue providing our entertainment for fans around the world. It is as if we went through the fight against the pandemic and everything else together, it was a fantastic experience.
Now is the time to turn the page and return to feel the energy of the crowd up close," Roman Reigns added. On the latest episode of SmackDown, Edge and Roman Reigns had a chance to confront one more time before Sunday's showdown.
The WWE Hall of Famer joined Rey and Dominik Mysterio against Reigns and the Usos. Although he won the Royal Rumble earlier this year, this is the Canadian’s first real chance of winning the title. All that remains is to wait a few hours to know the verdict of the ring.
Roman Reigns tweeted a message to the WWE Universe regarding tonight's big six-man Tag Team Match. He mentioned how Edge got stacked and pinned alongside Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37, while declaring that the Mysterios are on borrowed time as SmackDown Tag Team Champions.
"For the first time since Edge got stacked and pinned in front of thousands of fans @WrestleMania and before the Mysterios lose their titles at #MITB…" tweeted Roman Reigns. The Universal Champion mentioned that Rey and Dominik Mysterio will lose their titles to The Usos at Money in the Bank. However, as things stand, WWE is yet to announce a SmackDown Tag Team Title match for the event.
