The latest episode of SmackDown went into the archive with a series of sensational twists, to say the least. John Cena shocked the WWE Universe by securing a match against Roman Reigns at SummerSlam, the most anticipated pay-per-view of the summer.
The 16-time world champion showed up in the ring after Baron Corbin abruptly interrupted the original signing of the contract between the 'Tribal Chief' and Finn Balor. The deal was supposed to officially sanction the challenge between 'The Prince' and Reigns at SummerSlam, but Corbin took advantage of the situation by trying to put his name on the contract.
The leader of the 'Cenation' prevented this from happening, throwing Baron out of the ring and putting his signature in front of an incredulous Roman. The most recent events have greatly impressed pro-wrestling legend Dutch Mantell, who did not miss the opportunity to express his opinion on the 'Smack Talk' show (broadcast on Sportskeeda).
Mantell reflects on John Cena
“I think WWE was just brilliant in this case! The way they managed to make one thing look - and then do another - was just incredible. Everything seemed set for Finn Balor against Roman Reigns, then Baron Corbin stepped in and got the upper hand and got his hands on the contract, but in the end, John Cena blew the bank to the delight of the WWE Universe,” analyzed a euphoric Mantell.
According to the former WWE manager, SmackDown bypassed Monday Night Raw at this juncture. “The SmackDown shows have been very bright in the past few weeks. I do not know who was the architect of this qualitative leap, but he must be acknowledged that he did an excellent job.
Last week in Miami and tonight's show drove the audience crazy. There is nothing to complain about, you have to be honest. SmackDown is the flagship show right now, with Raw falling far behind”. In a segment between Adam Pierce and Sonya Deville, it has been confirmed that Roman Reigns will challenge John Cena at SummerSlam.
No matter how you look at it, John Cena just stole a very lucrative opportunity away from Finn Balor. The match, which has now been confirmed for SummerSlam, was originally meant to be between Finn Balor and Roman Reigns. However, Cena's actions have put an end to that.
It's something that Finn Balor will not be too happy about. It wouldn't be too surprising to see Finn Balor confront John Cena following his actions on tonight's SmackDown. Perhaps this will lead to a possible Triple Threat between Balor, Cena and Reigns at SummerSlam.
