Over the past few years, Tommaso Ciampa has established himself as one of the pillars of NXT, receiving acclaim from both fans and insiders. He recently won the NXT Championship for the second time thanks to the injury of Samoa Joe, who was forced to leave the belt vacant.
Ciampa made his television debut way back in 2005, signing his first WWE contract two years later. However, the Stamford-based company decided to get rid of him in 2007. After spending a few years on the independent circuit, Tommaso was re-signed by WWE in 2015 and made his debut at NXT as a member of a tag team alongside Johnny Gargano.
His perseverance and work ethic have made him a symbol of the 'Black and Gold' brand, both as a single wrestler and as a leader of a tag team. Many believe that NXT represents his ideal goal and that it would be a grave mistake to transfer him to the main roster (where he would become one among many).
In a recent interview with 'Metro', Ciampa recalled when he was called into Vince McMahon's office on the eve of his WWE debut in 2005.
Tommaso Ciampa reflects on Vince McMahon
“I was called to Vince McMahon's office because I had to rehearse my speech in front of him.
When I finally managed to find Vince's office, I remember there was Triple H making protein shakes. I was super nervous, but the moment I saw Hunter in a tank top offering Vince a protein shake, all my tension was gone in an instant” - Tommaso Ciampa said.
As part of his 'Hall of Fame' podcast, Booker T warned WWE about Tommaso Ciampa's future. “It must be clear that not all athletes are destined for the same type of career. NXT is the ideal place to allow Ciampa to express himself at his best.
If he were moved to the main roster, he would risk getting lost in the crowd”. Booker T, while talking about the new iteration of NXT on his Hall of Fame podcast, discussed current NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa and why he's perfect for the brand.
"Tommaso Ciampa, I think if he came to the main roster, he'd get lost in the shuffle. In NXT, he's going to be playing at a high level, he's going to play a big role there, he's great for those younger guys coming up that he can actually help, hopefully, mentor and guide to what is going to take for you guys to go to the next level.
If that's talking bad about somebody, I wished somebody talked about me like that sometimes. A guy like Tommaso Ciampa, he's perfect for NXT - and people can take that and look at it however they want. There, again, if someone was calling me 'perfect', I'd take it any day of the week," said Booker T.
