JBL's career in wrestling began in the early 1990s, first in some independent American federations and then in WWE. During his long Stamford-based federation adventure, he won the WWE Championship once, the US title once, the European Championship once, the Hardcore Championship eighteen times, and the World Tag Team Championship three times alongside Ron Simmons.
Also thanks to these successes, in 2021 he was officially inducted into the Hall of Fame. Speaking in the latest edition of 'Stories', the former WWE star revealed what was the best match he has ever witnessed live. Contrary to expectations, John cited the clash between John Cena and Umaga which took place at the Royal Rumble in 2007.
“I remember that match between John Cena and Umaga at the Royal Rumble like it was yesterday. I wasn't supposed to comment on that challenge, so I took off my headphones to better hear the audience's reactions. I was sitting at ringside and I felt an indescribable sensation” - said JBL.
JBL opens up on John Cena
“I can say with certainty that it was one of the best wrestling matches I've ever seen in my life. I place him in the very first places, even if it is very difficult to choose just one,” JBL added.
The leader of the 'Cenation' defeated Umaga at both New Year's Revolution and the Royal Rumble in early 2007. Later in the year, the 16-time world champion again beat Umaga in a triple threat match that also involved The Great Khali.
In August 2007, Umaga was suspended from WWE for thirty days because his name was found in the customer database of 'Signature Pharmacy', a company under investigation for selling drugs and performance-enhancing drugs without a regular prescription.
It was the beginning of his slow and inexorable decline. Umaga died on December 4, 2009, at the age of 36, of a massive heart attack due - in all probability - to drug abuse. The rescue attempts were useless. John Cena debuted in WWE in June 2002 while answering the open challenge of Kurt Angle on SmackDown.
Earlier that year, Cena started dating former WWE Superstar Victoria when both were in developmental. Cena was single when the couple started dating. However, the two-time Women's Champion was married to Lee Varon. While their marriage lasted for 21 years between 1994 and 2015, Veron and Victoria were on a break in 2002 when the latter dated Cena.
