The WWE Survivor Series 2021 Pay Per View was held tonight, a long-awaited event by the WWE Universe. From fans of the WWE Universe, both on TV and at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, there was the hope of seeing, if only for a few minutes, the wrestling legend and now actor The Rock.
There had been a lot of discussion about this possibility as the Survivor Series coincided with the 25th anniversary of The Rock's debut in WWE. Despite this, WWE failed to please their fans and The Rock did not show up at the event.
Why wasn't The Rock at Survivor Series?
During the last episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, the well-known colleague Dave Meltzer clarified the reason for the non-presence of The Rock, explaining that, despite a few too many rumors, there was never the possibility of seeing the wrestler at the Survivor Series.
Here are his specific words: "Currently Dwayne Johnson (real name of The Rock) is out of the country, he is making a film and could not return. There is the situation linked to the quarantine and the problems regarding Covid-19, for this reason, there was never any chance that he would participate in the Survivor Series."
Meltzer clarified that, despite some rumors, WWE has never advertised the presence of The Rock and therefore the expectation of the public was not explainable. Here are his words: "They never advertised The Rock's presence on the SS.
It's just something that people have built in their minds and I also wrote weeks ago that there was no chance of him being there. I could understand the anger if it had been advertised but that was definitely not the case."
Regarding the WWE videos of the last few weeks with The Rock, Meltzer replied: "They showed a clip of him, it also happened with Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, but that didn't mean we would see them again, they were just video clips."
Reports about The Rock's in-ring status change with each passing week as there is still no timeframe regarding his next on-screen appearance. There was an earlier belief that The Rock could be back to set up a WrestleMania 38 match against Roman Reigns.
However, all roads now seemingly lead to Brock Lesnar's rematch against the reigning Universal champions, and a big-money match featuring The Rock could be saved for a later date. Meltzer noted that WWE did not advertise The Rock for Survivor Series, and the speculation regarding his comeback was just a figment of the fans' imagination.
