Bret Hart Speaks About Punching Vince McMahon

Bret Hart, the legendary professional wrestler, is famously known as one of the only people in the world that punched Vince McMahon and didn’t get into any trouble for it. He did it after the Montreal Screwjob which is one of the most infamous events in professional wrestling history.

The screwjob happened nearly 25 years ago.

Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were having a very heated rivalry at that time. However, at the end of the rivalry which was going to end at the 1998 Survivor Series, Bret was supposed to win and retain the WWE World Title that he held during that time.

However, the Screwjob happened when Bret was put in a Sharpshooter by Shawn Michaels and the referee called for the bell even though Bret never tapped out to it. Of course, all of this was recorded. What happened backstage after that Screwjob wasn’t recorded, however, we know that Vince McMahon did get punched as he cut a promo the very next night with a black eye.

Bret recently spoke to The Ringer, where he stated that he believes he did the right thing that night. "I'm a pretty easygoing guy," Hart said. "But I do know that I had a lot of dark thoughts, really crazy, dark thoughts about how angry I was when that happened." "I said, 'I'm not in a friendly mood and this is not going to go well and you need to go right now,'" Hart continued.

"And he stayed. And I always think whatever happened that day defined me as a person. And it was probably the greatest thing I ever did, in the sense that I stood up for myself like no other wrestler ever stood up for themselves," he added.

The Screwjob actually proved to be much worse for Bret Hart’s career. He was at that time considered one of the best wrestlers in the world and he made his way to WCW after leaving the WWE. However, in WCW, he couldn’t wrestle for a very long time as he suffered a very bad injury that caused a concussion.

He also suffered multiple concussions after that, which forced him to retire. So going to the WCW didn’t prove to be a good thing for him. He also revealed during interviews that WCW did not even pay him the amount that was promised to him after he retired and couldn’t wrestle anymore.
