In 2018, WWE debuted a new award on its television screens, namely the World Cup, a real world cup, which would have crowned the "best in the world" of WWE, in the Crown Jewel rings of that year. Shane McMahon won the first edition of the WWE World Cup at Crown Jewel, taking over The Miz's place during the tournament, given the injury of the Awesome One.
The story has created a lot of criticism from insiders and fans, as well as the belief of a heel turn of the Commissioner from the SmackDown era that actually didn't take place except for weeks. In the meantime Shane had also reappeared on SmackDown without even taking measures for the 6-0 (or perhaps it would be better to say 6-1) that Raw had trimmed on the blue show at the Survivor Series of the same year.
Apparently, although this World Cup seems to have been Vince McMahon's idea, the new WWE by Triple H wanted to bring it back on stage, with a tournament that has been going on in recent weeks and which has seen its own conclusion in tonight's episode of the blue show.
Ricochet rose to prominence as the masked Prince Puma in Lucha Underground, and he decided to quit the company in 2017 after attracting WWE officials' attention.
Ricochet won the WWE World Cup
During the Friday Night Smackdown episode aired tonight, WWE wanted to stage the final of the tournament to decree the new winner of its world cup, with the contest that saw Ricochet go to contend for the cup against Santos Escobar.
After an initial victory that seemed obvious for Braun Strowman, Ricochet had managed to snatch a ticket to the final by beating WWE's Monster Among Men by robbery, finishing tonight in the final with the ex NXT Mexican-born talent.
It was Ricochet who had the upper hand, even in this match, after a great match against Escobar that electrified the fans from home and those present in the arena. One of the most agile men in WWE, he managed to get the final pin after his 630 Splash, having already landed his opponent with a Hurricanrana from the top rope.
We recall how Ricochet beat Mustafa Ali and Braun Strowman in previous matches of the tournament, while Escobar beat Shinsuke Nakamura and Butch instead. Here's what Marty Elias had to share about his conversation with Ricochet: "Oddly enough, they have put the handcuffs on him.
When he was at Lucha Underground, and when he wanted to go to, and I'll be talking about these things about going underground."
