During the latest episode of Friday Night Smackdown, we saw Canadian Kevin Owens join forces with the returning John Cena, multiple WWE World Champion, in a tag team match against Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. Thanks to this dispute, Kevin Owens enters the WWE statistics and records by right as the only athlete to have fought in a match involving both Steve Austin and in one involving John Cena, since 2002, the last year in which the two now legendary athletes have both worked in the WWE rings.
For 20 years, then, no other athlete had managed to work with both, in different matches, but still in the same calendar year. All this was allowed only to the McMahon Prizefighter, who will now also be able to boast of this great personal best.
However, WWE Universe fans did not miss the fact that Cena fought very little during the contest of the blue show and there are those who have come to reveal the reason for this rather short timing.
Backstage news on John Cena
To give us details on how things unfolded during the main event of the last episode of Smackdown, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer thought about it, who highlighted various aspects of the match that are not usually staged for other Superstars.
To prevent John Cena from injuring any part of his body and then having to postpone all of his shooting in which he is involved, the part of the match that included the former champion has been reduced significantly. As you may have noticed from the contest, most of the time it was Kevin Owens in the ring, with the moves and maneuvers performed by Cena and his opponents on him that were executed perfectly, with remarkable caution.
In the end, Cena hit Reigns with the AA of him, keeping his status high in WWE, even furthering his status as a "superman" for the action movies he's involved in. Furthermore, FOX promoted Cena's match during the last NFL games, so as to be able to reach as many people as possible, with Cena's participation in Smackdown which also gave considerable visibility to the channel.
On the Kurt Angle show, the Olympic gold medalist added that Cena's accomplishments clearly put him above any other talent. "Looking back, I mean, at the career he has had. He is the greatest WWE Superstar of all time because he won 16 WWE world titles," noted Kurt Angle.
"He is the only one to do that. Ric Flair won world titles in other companies. John Cena has done it only in the WWE, and that's what makes him stand out."
