Austin Theory has recently won the United States Championship at Survivor Series: WarGames, a victory that certainly helps to revive his character. Austin had received a big push in late 2021 and early 2022, as well as becoming Vince Mcmahon's protégé and winning the Money in the Bank during the PPV of the same name.

After the latter's sensational retirement last July and the advent of Triple H as the new head of the creative team, Theory's status had radically changed. The latter had suffered several defeats and many experts feared that he was now burned.

According to the latest rumors, Theory should have faced John Cena at Wrestlemania 39. The 16-time world champion should have returned to action next year at the Showcase of the Immortals, which will be held a stone's throw from Hollywood.

The 2023 edition of Mania should also host the great returns of The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. All this was almost confirmed, after seeing the interactions of last summer, when John Cena returned to celebrate his 20 years with WWE together with Vince McMahon and had faced the young Theory right face to face, but then he didn't nothing more is known.

There are a lot of questions about whether or not John Cena will compete at WrestleMania 39.

Backstage news on John Cena

In his last appearance in the WWE rings, on the December 30 episode of Friday Night Smackdown, John Cena would also have recorded additional content, which WWE would be keeping well hidden from fans, most likely for future use.

As reported by the Fightful Select, in fact: “A changed main event could hide much more than meets the eye. Fightful Select has learned that WWE filmed some content with John Cena and United States Champion Austin Theory during the latest episode of December 30th Smackdown in which Cena took part.

Theory was originally slated to main event a live event in Toronto against Seth Rollins in the cage. Theory was instead diverted to Tampa, where he recorded a segment with John Cena. We weren't told whether that content is for digital use, future use, or 2K, but the segment has certainly been recorded.

We can also confirm that at the end of November there were internal plans that saw John Cena face Logan Paul at WrestleMania, but after two months, we no longer know how things stand." The 16-time world champion has not competed in a televised WWE bout since losing to Reigns at SummerSlam 2021.
