Speaking to The Wrestling Classic, Matt Cardona talked about his brief adventure in AEW three years ago. Cody Rhodes referred him to an agent. However, Cardona had other plans. “Cody [Rhodes], right away put me in contact with his agent, gave me some great advice.
But, like in the wrestling business, if a producer or agent is giving you feedback on a match, sometimes that advice doesn’t work for you. I realized I didn’t need an agent. I wanted to be that guy in the trenches.
I wanted to be that guy doing the numbers and negotiating”. - Cardona said, as quoted by pwmania.com Cardona did not expect that some things would turn out totally differently. However, he is happy about the development of the situation.
“Cody [Rhodes] set me up for sure, got me that AEW cup of coffee run. I am grateful for that. Didn’t work out at the time, I’ll admit I was bummed out. I was like, ‘Oh sh** now what.’ Looking back, a blessing in disguise.
If I had signed with AEW then, I’d be on f***ing Dark. No offense to those guys, but that’s not what I want. I was already that guy in WWE”.
WWE return
A few months ago, in an interview with Jason Powell's Pro Wrestling Boom Podcast, Cardona talked about a potential return to WWE.
“I’ve been saying since I got released from WWE, it’s not my goal to get back there. I’m not doing things, ‘oh what can I do to get WWE to notice me,’ no. I’m trying to create my own path but at the same time, I’d be lying if I said I never wanted to have another WrestleMania moment or wrestle in Madison Square Garden, of course, I do.
I lived my dream for over a decade and I wouldn’t be where I am today without WWE,” Cardona said. “I said it before, that WWE was my developmental and that’s not a shot at WWE. They truly taught me how to be a superstar and that is why I’m thriving in places like NWA, Impact, GCW, and all these other independents”.
