Lucha-libre icon and WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio recently sat down with the New York Post to discuss his upcoming match at WrestleMania 39, where he will face his son, Dominik. The interview also touched on Mysterio's induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, which he initially found shocking, as he associated such an honor with retirement.
Mysterio, who has had an illustrious career spanning over three decades, expressed his surprise and gratitude when he first learned about his upcoming Hall of Fame induction. He recounted when Triple H, WWE Executive Vice President of Global Talent Strategy & Development, approached him with the news.
Mysterio said, "I was pulled aside by Triple H, and he told me, 'Rey, we would love to induct you into the Hall of Fame.' It was very shocking to me. It was like, 'Wow.' I remember the first words that came out of my mouth were, 'I'm not ready to retire.'
He's like, 'No, it's not like that.' " The 48-year-old wrestling legend explained why he has always associated Hall of Fame inductions with retirement, expressing his belief that such honors should be reserved for those nearing the end of their careers.
Mysterio said, "I'm still having a hard time digesting it because Hall of Fames are supposed to happen when you retire when you're getting close to retirement. I don't feel either is close to me, but it's a huge blessing."
Mysterio Grateful for Honor, Plans to Wrestle Until 50
Despite his initial hesitation, Mysterio is incredibly grateful for the honor, recognizing it as a testament to his hard work and dedication to the wrestling industry.
He also revealed his plans for the future, confirming that he intends to continue wrestling until he is at least 50 years old. He stated, "I think I do have a number, and I want to keep it at that, and my number is 50. I'm hoping at 50, I can go ahead and say it's been an incredible ride, and I think it's time for me to step back now." Mysterio's Hall of Fame induction adds another accolade to his already impressive resume, which includes multiple championship titles and memorable moments in WWE history.
As he prepares to face his son Dominik at WrestleMania 39, fans can look forward to witnessing the continuing legacy of Rey Mysterio, both in and out of the ring. Although Mysterio has always linked Hall of Fame inductions to retirement, he now embraces the honor while actively competing in WWE.
This mindset reflects a growing trend among professional wrestlers who continue to perform at a high level well into their later years. With Mysterio's unwavering dedication to his craft, fans can expect many more memorable moments and matches from this legend in future years.
