SmackDown Women's Champion Rhea Ripley has hinted that she might be able to convince her partner and AEW star Buddy Matthews (formerly known as Buddy Murphy) to leave his current promotion and return to WWE. Matthews initially signed with WWE in 2013 and competed for nearly eight years.
He captured the NXT Tag Team Title, RAW Tag Team Championship, and Cruiserweight Title during his tenure. However, WWE released him from his contract in June 2021. Shortly after, the 34-year-old wrestler joined AEW, where he is now a member of the House of Black and holds the Trios Championship.
Ripley Talks Matthews' Return
In a recent interview with Gery Roif, Ripley discussed the prospect of persuading Matthews to make a WWE comeback. She emphasized her persuasive abilities and acknowledged the uncertainty of the future.
"Ohh, maybe, maybe. I don't know. So, I'm very convincing. I'm a compelling girl, you know. I normally get what I want. So, it might happen; you never know. But right now, I'm happy with my DomDom. I'm happy going out there with him and Finn and Damian, and I mean, you never know what the future holds.
It might happen," she said. Rhea Ripley's WWE on-screen partner, Dominik Mysterio, also shared his thoughts on Buddy Matthews. Over the past few months, Ripley has been paired with Dominik as part of the Judgment Day storyline.
The two are currently portrayed as an on-screen couple. In an interview with Sportskeeda Wrestling's Riju Dasgupta, Dominik commented on Ripley's real-life relationship with Matthews and recalled Matthews' romantic angle with his sister Aaliyah in 2020.
"Yeah, well, he kissed my sister [Aalyah], so I don't know, we might have some problems there family dynamic-wise, but overall I think my dynamic with Mami works both ends, on my side and her side. When we're at the TV, it just works out for us," Dominik explained.
As for the future of Dominik and Rhea's partnership, it remains to be seen how it would be affected if Buddy Matthews were to rejoin WWE at some point.
