The world of professional wrestling is buzzing with the exciting announcement of CM Punk's return to the ring. After much conjecture, the former WWE superstar, nicknamed the Second City Saint, has been confirmed to appear in the debut AEW Collision show, further intensifying the anticipation around the event.
The president of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), Tony Khan, announced on Wednesday's AEW Dynamite that an enthralling trio match would lead the inaugural AEW Collision show. The formidable trio of Jay White, Juice Robinson, and Ring of Honor Television Champion Samoa Joe will face the powerful team of AEW World Tag Team Champions FTR and the returning CM Punk.
These trios match the second instance where Punk has teamed up with FTR, the first being the notable AEW Dynamite match where Punk, unfortunately, fractured his foot during his entrance. Following the announcement, the wrestling sensation CM Punk took to social media to share some intriguing images.
First, a dynamic Boomerang showcased Punk clad in a Bret Hart hoodie, accompanied by the caption "For Bret." Following this, Punk shared a victorious snapshot from his AEW World Championship triumph at AEW Double or Nothing 2022 alongside FTR and a graphic for the upcoming AEW Collision on June 17th.
Punk's Heartfelt Tribute to Hart
Since his induction into AEW in the summer of 2021, Punk has been vocal about his admiration for WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. At the AEW Revolution post-show press conference, Punk confessed, "I love Bret Hart and his career got cut short...
I feel super fortunate and grateful that I got a second chance. I'd give it up in a heartbeat to give it to Bret." Punk's statement is a poignant reference to Hart's sudden career-ending injury during a match with Goldberg in 1999.
A poorly executed kick from Goldberg caused Hart a severe concussion, marking the unfortunate end of his in-ring career. Although a dream match between Hart and Punk never came to fruition, they have shared the ring before.
Fans have persistently desired to see Hart make a managerial appearance for Punk or FTR at an AEW show. However, Hart's WWE Legends contract prevents such a crossover. Interestingly, Hart did present the AEW World Title at AEW All Out 2019, making his mark in AEW history.
