Mick Foley Reveals WWE's Original Hell in a Cell Plan for a Jaw-Dropping Stunt

Mick Foley, the iconic WWE superstar known for his fearless stunts and larger-than-life persona, recently opened up about one of the most memorable matches in wrestling history—the infamous Hell in a Cell encounter with The Undertaker on June 28, 1998.

In a candid discussion on his podcast, "Foley Is Pod," the hardcore legend revealed that the match initially had a different plan—one that didn't involve the jaw-dropping bumps that have become etched in the minds of wrestling fans worldwide.

Foley's original vision for the match was centered around a unique chokeslam variation. On this move, The Undertaker would lift him high and forcefully drive him down onto the mat. However, Foley had an intriguing twist in mind.

He envisioned a scenario where a section of the cell's roof would give way upon impact, creating a visually stunning moment as he was plunged headfirst into the ring below. Describing the planned spot, Foley explained, "The idea was that Undertaker, this is the big visual I was looking for, Undertaker's going to chokeslam me, and a corner of that cell, of that panel, would just give way...

And he's eventually going to stuff me down, headfirst."

Foley's Daring Upside-Down Plunge

The former WWE Champion had envisioned himself dangling upside down, arms flailing, as The Undertaker released his grip on Foley's knees, leaving him to execute a dramatic semi-turn and take a massive bump into the ring.

Foley believed he could handle the moment's intensity, as he had always been willing to push his body to the limits to create captivating performances. However, it was during that fateful day, as Foley discussed the match with his trusted friend and fellow wrestling legend Terry Funk, that a new, even more, audacious idea emerged.

Foley recalled, "It was only during the day that I said, 'Hey, how about you throw me off the top of that thing?' going back to what Terry Funk said." Little did they know that this spontaneous suggestion would forever change the landscape of professional wrestling.

Foley's plunge off the towering structure, crashing through the Spanish Announcer's table below, became an indelible image etched into the annals of wrestling history. As fans reminisce about that unforgettable night 25 years later, it reminds them of the unpredictability and sheer spectacle that can unfold within the squared circle.

Mick Foley's revelations offer a rare glimpse into the creative process behind such iconic moments and reinforce his enduring legacy as one of the most daring performers in WWE history.
