AEW International Champion Orange Cassidy recently etched his name into wrestling history by setting a record for the most successful title defenses. At the Battle of Belts VII event in Calgary, he successfully defended his title for the 26th time consecutively, beating out the previous record held by the former TBS Champion, Jade Cargill.
Cassidy faced a formidable opponent, Lance Archer, in the headlining match, with the AEW International Championship at stake. The two contenders gave their all in an exhilarating duel that left the audience on the edge of their seats.
However, the unexpected turn of events that led to Cassidy's victory was a departure from AEW's typical resolution style. Countout finishes are a rarity in AEW. Still, in a surprising turn of events, the heated battle between Cassidy and Archer saw them trading blows on the apron after spilling out of the ring.
Cassidy dealt a decisive blow with the referee counting down, causing Archer to stagger from the apron to the floor. Cassidy made it back into the ring just in time to beat the referee's ten-count, while Archer failed, resulting in a count-out victory for Cassidy.
This victory was more than just another win for Cassidy - it was a historic achievement that saw him break the record for the most consecutive successful title defenses as an International Champion. Until this match, he was neck and neck with Jade Cargill, standing at 25 successful reasons.
Cassidy's triumph in Calgary made him the sole holder of the record.
Championship Title Evolution Under Cassidy
Interestingly, the title held by Orange Cassidy has changed name since he first won it on October 22, 2022. Originally referred to as the All-Atlantic Championship, it was rechristened as the International Championship on March 8, 2023, by the AEW.
As such, Cassidy has reigned as the champion under two different titles for approximately nine months, amounting to over 270 days of holding the championship. While Orange Cassidy's reaction to his impressive achievement remains a mystery, given his laid-back demeanor, we can safely assume he would at least offer his characteristic thumbs-up, accompanied by his trademark nonchalance.
Despite his calm exterior, this monumental achievement deserves nothing but accolades. Congratulations to Orange Cassidy on setting a new bar in AEW history.
