Amidst the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes advocating for fair remuneration in Hollywood, a few independent projects, such as the biopic "Queen of the Ring: Based on the True Story of Mildred Burke," continue their operation unperturbed.
Directed by Ash Avildsen, this film, inspired by the 2009 book of the same name, explores the life of the trailblazing female wrestler Mildred Burke. It's currently being shot in Louisville, Kentucky, featuring Emily Bett Rickards, known for her role in "Arrow," as the lead.
However, recent updates suggest some significant changes to the original cast line-up, which was set to include leading WWE stars. Charlotte Flair and Liv Morgan, both former WWE Women's Champions, were initially chosen to portray June Byers and Clara Mortensen, two legendary opponents of Burke.
However, recent information from PWInsider reveals that these roles have been assigned to different champions. NWA Women's Champion Kamille is slated to play Byers, while AEW Women's Champion Toni Storm will portray Clara Mortensen.
"Exist of Casting : Potential Reasons"
While the specific reasons for this casting switch have not been revealed, several factors could be involved. Liv Morgan recently suffered a shoulder injury during a match with Rhea Ripley, in which she lost her WWE Women's Tag Team Championship for the second time this year.
Simultaneously, Charlotte Flair, also known as "The Queen," is presently engrossed in preparing for an intense triple threat match for the WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam against formidable competitors Asuka and Bianca Belair.
Given the event's proximity, it's plausible that Flair's packed schedule of shows and promotional events hampered her ability to participate in the film's production. Nevertheless, despite losing two critical WWE stars, the biopic continues to boast a high-profile cast.
The line-up still includes Emily Bett Rickards, Kamille, and Toni Storm, supplemented by other well-known faces. Deborah Ann Woll of "Daredevil" fame will feature as Gladys "Kill Em" Gillem; Martin Kove, renowned for his roles in "Karate Kid" and "Cobra Kai," will play Al Haft, while award-winning actor Walton Goggins is set to portray promoter Jack Pfefer. This cast change, although unexpected, is expected to maintain the film's anticipated success.
