New revelations suggest that the powerhouse duo, Authors of Pain (AOP), might have clandestinely reunited with the WWE well before it became public knowledge. The Authors of Pain, comprising Akam and Rezar, stormed into the spotlight when they debuted in NXT in 2016.
Their meteoric rise saw them clinch victory in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and the coveted NXT Tag Team Championship title, all within a year of their debut. Adding gravitas to their prowess was the association with WWE Hall of Famer Paul Ellering.
Their dominance continued as they made a dramatic entry to Monday Night Raw in 2018. Marking their ascendancy to the main roster, they attacked their mentor, Ellering, indicating a dramatic end to their partnership. Their journey saw them crowned Raw Tag Team Champions later that year.
However, this victory was short-lived, with them dropping the titles in just 35 days to the formidable duo of Chad Gable and Bobby Roode. Their WWE journey hit a stumbling block in 2020. While in an alliance with the enigmatic Seth Rollins, Rezar sustained a biceps injury, pushing AOP away from the WWE spotlight.
In an unexpected turn of events, they were released from their WWE contracts later that year. Post-WWE, the team remained conspicuously absent from the wrestling circuit. They ventured to launch the Wrestling Entertainment Series in 2022.
Despite generating significant buzz, the project faced postponement and eventual cancellation.
Are the Authors of Pain back in the WWE fold?
Earlier this year, Fightful Select hinted at WWE's keenness in getting AOP back.
Amplifying this, recent updates from the same source suggest that the duo may have rejoined WWE in 2022. Although this remains unverified, insiders hint that this reunion transpired before Vince McMahon's resurgence, which shifted the company's recruitment focus.
Interestingly, during their negotiations to return, AOP seemed adamant about Paul Ellering’s significant involvement. This assertion sparks curiosity about the potential storylines awaiting fans. While Fightful Select also indicated that AOP's names popped up on an internal travel list in May, official statements are awaited. Neither WWE nor the Authors of Pain have commented on these speculations.
