WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle recently engaged in an insightful conversation with Sports Illustrated, shedding light on his forthcoming documentary. During the discussion, the celebrated Olympic Gold medalist disclosed a remarkable anecdote – a shoot wrestling match victory over none other than the Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar, back in 2002.
Angle vividly recalled the encounter, revealing that it took place just before a WWE event nearly two decades ago. The match, shrouded in intrigue and intensity, was a result of a challenge issued by Lesnar himself. Angle reminisced about his training under the tutelage of Dave Shultz, emphasizing the significance of the techniques imparted by Shultz in securing his victory against Lesnar.
"Dave taught me how to teach myself. The technique he instilled in me, that’s ultimately how I beat Brock," Angle recounted.
Angle's Hard-Fought Victory
Describing the showdown with Lesnar, Angle admitted that it was an incredibly close contest, dispelling any notion of dominance.
"Brock was picking Big Show up, double legging him, just wrecking him–and that’s when I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can beat this kid. But I figured, I may as well try. It was a tight match. I didn’t dominate.
But I won," Angle explained. Angle's triumph over Lesnar highlighted the fine line that separates a national champion from an Olympic gold medalist. Drawing from his own experience, Angle emphasized the importance of positioning in wrestling, which he had mastered under Shultz's guidance.
"There’s a big difference between a national champion and a gold medalist. I knew Brock was going to do his college wrestling with straight double legs. It was all about positioning. That’s what Dave taught me, and that’s why I hardly ever got scored on.
Brock didn’t score on me," he elaborated. This revelation from Kurt Angle provides a captivating glimpse into the world of professional wrestling, showcasing the remarkable skills and determination that define the sport's elite competitors.
Angle's upcoming documentary promises to delve even deeper into his storied career, offering fans a unique perspective on his journey from Olympic glory to WWE superstardom.
