World Wrestling Entertainment is broadening its horizons with a foray into new streaming territories. The Roku Channel is set to become the home of the latest WWE venture, an eight-episode documentary series entitled ‘WWE: Recruits’.
The program, which commenced production with behind-the-scenes footage at the last Wrestlemania, is being helmed by WWE icon John Cena as both a producer and a cast member. ‘WWE: Recruits’ promises to deliver an unprecedented glimpse into the grueling journey of aspiring wrestlers.
The series will chronicle the challenges and triumphs of a diverse group of men and women as they navigate the demanding path towards earning the coveted title of WWE superstars. The narrative will be enriched by the appearances of industry titans such as Paul “Triple H” Levesque, who spearheads WWE’s creative vision; the legendary Ric Flair; the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels; and the talented Bianca Belair.
Renowned for their production of reality competition stalwarts like 'Hell’s Kitchen' and 'American Ninja Warrior', A. Smith & Co. Productions is at the series’ production helm. This endeavor marks another strategic move for WWE, which recently announced an intended merger with Endeavor’s UFC, as it seeks to extend its brand reach and tap into new content streams.
Unveiling Superstar Journeys
Endeavor’s COO Mark Shapiro recently disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter the company’s ambitious plans for non-scripted programming, documentaries, and social media ventures following the merger.
‘WWE: Recruits’ embodies this expansion strategy, enhancing WWE’s presence on multiple platforms, including NBCUniversal, Fox, A+E Networks, Netflix, USA Network, and Peacock. “We’re unveiling the human stories behind the superstars,” stated John Cena, underscoring the series' unique narrative.
Sean Boyle, Roku Channel's head of adventure and exploration programming, echoes Cena’s excitement, highlighting the series as a deep dive into the personal stories of young athletes in pursuit of wrestling stardom.
This high-profile series is poised to offer Roku Channel viewers a raw and inspiring account of what it takes to rise through the ranks of WWE’s celebrated roster. With a production powerhouse and a wrestling icon at the helm, 'WWE: Recruits' is gearing up to captivate audiences with the allure and heart of professional wrestling.
