Graves' wrestling aspirations seemed distant as he grappled with the responsibilities of fatherhood and a day job as a 911 dispatcher in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh. The birth of his first son, a moment he missed due to a wrestling tour in Spain, and the arrival of his second child, underscored the harsh realities of balancing dreams with duty.
"I either needed to go get a real job and support my family, or keep chasing this dream," Graves recounted. Ironically, his work schedule left him free on Mondays and Tuesdays, coinciding with "WWE Raw" and "WWE SmackDown" broadcasts.
His break came when WWE visited Pittsburgh. Graves received a call from Tommy Dreamer, an ECW legend and then a WWE executive, offering him a two-day gig in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. "I had absolutely no expectations," Graves admitted, viewing the opportunity merely as a financial boon for his family.

What followed was an unexpected turn. While working as enhancement talent, Graves engaged in meaningful discussions with WWE executives. Within six weeks, he was offered a developmental contract and found himself training in the FCW system alongside future stars like Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, Charlotte Flair, and Jon Moxley.
It was here, in the crucible of FCW, that Graves, with Wyatt's help, crafted his "Corey Graves" persona. Despite a promising start in NXT, Graves' in-ring career was cut short by concussions. Yet, he pivoted to announcing, a skill he attributes to his father's influence.
"Wrestling is the fabric of all my childhood memories," Graves shared, reminiscing about growing up in an era dominated by Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, under his father's enthusiastic fandom. Graves' story is not just about his ascent to WWE; it's a narrative of resilience and adaptability, embodying the spirit of wrestling itself.
