As the excitement builds for WrestleMania 40, the WWE Universe is buzzing with speculation about who will challenge Roman Reigns for the coveted Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at the grand event in April 2024. While the challenger remains a mystery, one thing is sure: a successful title defense by the "Tribal Chief" would undoubtedly stir up a storm of controversy, according to WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray.

In a recent "Busted Open Radio" episode, Bully Ray shared his thoughts on the potential aftermath of Reigns retaining the championship. He expressed his belief that such an outcome could lead to frustration among fans due to Reigns' sporadic wrestling schedule and intermittent title defenses.

Ray even suggested that WWE might designate Reigns' championship as one defended only when necessary while elevating another title, like Seth Rollins' World Heavyweight Championship, as the workhorse championship. "If [Reigns] retains and moves on, I think people will get extremely frustrated with the schedule," Ray stated.

"Then I think the cracks in the wall will become a little bigger when it comes to Roman wrestling so sporadically and defending so sporadically."

Comparing Reigns' Controversial Win

Ray also compared the potential reaction to Reigns retaining the title to the passionate response Cody Rhodes' fans had after his loss at WrestleMania 39.

The fallout from that match sparked intense debate within the WWE community, with vocal supporters and detractors of the booking decision. In the aftermath of his victory over "The American Nightmare," Reigns went on to notch successful title defenses against notable opponents such as Jey Uso, LA Knight, Rey Mysterio, and Sami Zayn, with the latter two matches taking place at WWE live events.

Roman Reigns' reign as the Universal Champion has been marked by a part-time schedule, resulting in fewer title defenses and an extended reign that has now surpassed an impressive 1,200 days. If he manages to retain at WrestleMania 40, it is clear that the WWE Universe will have much to discuss and debate in the weeks that follow, with vocal opinions echoing through the wrestling world.

The anticipation for the upcoming event continues to build, promising an electrifying showdown on the grandest stage of them all.
