Over the course of his time with WWE, Rey Mysterio has achieved sustained success, and is a two-time Intercontinental champion, a former United States Champion, a four-time tag-team champion, a three-time Cruiserweight champion, and a three-time world champion.
He is also a Royal Rumble match winner, and has headlined several major WWE pay-per-view events. He departed the company in 2015 and then wrestled on the independent circuit, before returning to WWE in 2018. In a recent interview with Wrestling Inc, Mysterio discussed Triple H’s work building up NXT: “I think he’s doing an incredible job.
NXT is recruiting its own fan base; commentating and the matches are unbelievable. The fact that they can do NXT like any WWE show – Europe, Mexico, US – it prepares them for being on the bigger stage. I think Hunter has done an incredible job of rolling out NXT slowly.
Most of the stars on Raw or SmackDown now have come from NXT. So, he’s molding up the future of this business”. At Money in the Bank on May 19, Mysterio defeated Joe to win his first United States Championship, becoming the twenty-first WWE Grand Slam Champion in the process.
Two weeks later on Raw, Mysterio announced that he would vacate the title the week after due to suffering an injury from a post-match beatdown by Joe.
