In the footsteps of his legendary father, Rey Mysterio, there is prodigy Dominik Mysterio, who just started to make his own name in the wrestling industry in 2018. Just like that, he and his father did it big at the WrestleMania Backlash in 2020, becoming the first father and son to secure the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships.

That not only combined them as a family but also created a charged-up scenario for the young Dominik's career. Much has been on his shoulders since his father was a great example of a career. Rey Mysterio himself admitted that tremendous pressure was mounted over the shoulders of his son.

"The comparisons were inevitably made and it's true he couldn't match up to them coming right out of the gate," shared Rey on the Jaxxon Podcast. Domínou would struggle to wrestle under the gargantuan legacy of his father, Dominik first fought to live up to standards and expectations that bore the Mysterio name.

Dominik's Defining Turn

The biggest moment of his professional career came in 2022 when Dominik turned heel and threw a big showdown with his father. This move was unquestionably set to be a huge career changer for him, as it would get him out of the shadow of his father, Rey, and make his name as an independent wrestler within WWE.

"Leaving was possibly the best thing that ever happened to him," Rey said. The move allowed Dominik to be his self, without constant comparisons of his dad, something that was necessary for his development in the ring. Rey Mysterio made his WWE debut in 2002 and has since gone on to win the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship twice, and the Intercontinental Championship twice during his illustrious career.

Now at 49, that already makes him a seasoned sports veteran who, however, remains active over in the RAW brand as arguably he nears twilight in professional wrestling. Looking back to a few years of experience and at how unique his son's challenges are, Rey added, "I've been in this profession for 35 years, starting at 14.

For Dominik, coming in with a different build at 6'1 and about 190 pounds, and not having my style—it was very hard for him at the beginning." As Rey potentially nears his final WrestleMania, the emphasis is more on Dominik, who keeps growing and asserting his place in WWE while showing he can make a name for himself outside of his legendary father's shadow.
