Some of the decisions that are made in the course of professional wrestling have been so bad they affected not only the careers of the wrestlers but the industry as a whole. Sometimes, even the soundest decisions of the wrestlers and the companies within which they work can be so ill-advised that everybody involved in this, or even the entire company, seems to join the free fall. To illustrate, The Montreal Screwjob ended and altered the direction of Bret Hart’s career, while the present abscess of WCW in its last years created factors for the closing of the firm in 2001. The other poorly received decision was when WWE made the decision to turn “Stone Cold” Steve Austin heel at WrestleMania 17, a decision that most fans believe helped facilitate the decline of wrestling in North America.
Tommy Dreamer Critiques WCW
Tommy Dreamer, an ECW legend who has watched professional wrestling for quite a long time, spoke on the current scenario in wrestling and highlighted what he thinks is one of the, as viewed from history, very poor business moves in wrestling. Duster Open Radio relayed séances from Dreamer whereby he mentioned in any WCW event that World Championship Wrestling is happy about doing such a case, which he ranked as the second greatest blunder ever committed in professional wrestling.
"I think the second most terrible mistake in the history of professional wrestling is the mask being taken from Rey Mysterio," Dreamer said. "Once Rey lost that mask, Rey still got over because Rey was, and is, the most different and out of context for any - probably even in all history - any most unique performer. Instead, once they took that mask off of him, he had to almost re-image himself. Thank goodness, at least the WWE was sensible enough to say we need to paint the mask again on him and that foolishness never existed, and this version of Rey Mysterio we have now and his career just took it to another level."
Dreamer explained further that Mysterio's extraordinary abilities still ensured considerable popularity for him even in the absence of the mask, despite the fact that loss was a terrible error on their part.
