Joey Ryan on Nearly Hanging Up Boots After WWE Rejection

For many indie wrestlers, landing in the WWE is like a dream come true. Only a handful of wrestlers are able to get into the WWE, and even fewer make it to the top of the company. The WWE pays its wrestlers really well, so indie wrestlers prefer working for the WWE.

Many famous WWE wrestlers of the present are actually former indie wrestlers. Guys like Ricochet spent years working for indie promotions before being hired by the WWE. Joey Ryan nearly joined the WWE in 2013. He is one of the most famous indie wrestlers ever to appear for a WWE tryout.

He got rejected by Bill DeMott, and he nearly hung up his boots due to it. It was Drake Younger that saved him. He spoke about it on the Talk is Jericho. “I did my tryout, I left, I knew Bill DeMott didn't like me. I did a PWG show with Drake Younger [the NXT Referee].

He was so energetic and was telling me he had these ideas about pulling out these Legos and we're going to treat them like they're thumbtacks, but we were just having fun. It was a really fun match so I thought, 'Okay, if my goal is no longer WWE, if that deal is off the table, then I am just going to wrestle for me, and have fun with it, and be more open to ideas, and not worry whether or not WWE is watching. Or if there is any reactions to it, I'm just going to wrestle for me and have fun."
