Cody Rhodes is ready to reach a critical stage of his WWE career, and important changes have influenced his future. Rhodes then took a short break after conclusively losing to John Cena at WrestleMania 41, though he returned out of nowhere to interfere in a match on Saturday Night Main Event on May 24 to prevent the meddling of Cena. This surprising resurrection rekindled his rivalry with Cena which predetermined a death match.

Rhodes also maintained his momentum when he overcame Jey Uso in the semifinals of the King of the Ring tournament on June 23 and qualified to face Randy Orton in the finals at the impending Night of Champions event. This bout will only get a title contention at the SummerSlam, making it worthwhile to both participants.
