Cesaro on struggling since The Bar split up

When playing a villainous character, particularly in the United States, Cesaro has been known to emphasize his European origin as part of his gimmick, proclaiming a superior intellect and fashion sensibility, and by regularly using the European uppercut.

Castagnoli is also known for his feats of strength in the ring and is frequently mentioned as one of WWE's best and most underrated performers. He was consequently recognized by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter as the Most Underrated Wrestler in the world a record four times, from 2013 to 2016.

On the May 20 episode of Raw, Cesaro debuted a new entrance theme and titantron separate from The Bar as he defeated Ricochet. He also adopted a new part of his gimmick where he would only allow backstage interviewers to ask him only one question before walking away.

He would then trade wins with Ricochet as they would feud over the following weeks. Their series of matches would receive praise from critics. He accepted Aleister Black's open challenge for a match at Extreme Rules in July, but was defeated at the event.

During a long interview with Sports Illustrated, the Swiss superstar commented on struggling since The Bar split up: “The split from Sheamus left me in an empty void. Becoming King of the Ring will help me keep climbing, and that’s what I want to do”.

He also added: “I plan on having a crowning ceremony with a crown, robe, and a scepter. That’s my next step to the world championship. Becoming world champion, that’s my goal every single day. That’s what I’m working toward. I’m working so hard and I don’t want to let anyone down”.
