Chavo Guerrero Jr. said he returned to WWE after 14 years of absence. The former ECW and Cruiserweight Champion appeared at the WWE x AAA Worlds Collide where several sources informed Fightful Select that Guerrero himself told them that he is back with the company in an official capacity. No confirmation has been made by WWE but fans as well as insiders are buzzing.

The appearance of Guerrero is not a cameo. In the last year he has been a regular face in the wrestling scene- performing at AAA, TNA, GCW and other indies. To add to that he had a surprise appearance on the TNA Impact show on the First Class Penthouse segment earlier this year. The fact that he remains visible indicates that WWE might be interested more than in a single appearance.

What this return could mean

The thing is, Chavo is not a mere nostalgia. He is a man who has mixed in-ring skills with actual TV production skills, having served as a wrestling coordinator and consultant on Netflix GLOW, Young Rock on NBC, and even a feature film The Iron Claw. That combination is an asset to him, regardless of whether WWE employs him in front of the camera, behind the scenes, or training talent in the Performance Center.

Backstage position is on the cards, perhaps as an official, WWE has already been swift to hand out producer or coach positions to those with more years behind them, particularly when they offer a TV‑savvy skillset. The strong connection of Guerrero to the lucha and the Guerrero family legacy may also assist WWE in forging a relationship with AAA. His attendance at Worlds Collide and his outspoken declarations to confidants indicate that he may enter a multi-promotional position between the two companies.

Then there is a plot angle. No matter whether he comes back in a creative capacity or as an on-screen mentor, there is a lot of storytelling potential in returning Legends. The decades-long history of Chavo with WWE beginning in 2001 and ending with his departure in 2011 is a vein that the company can tap into with a very rich story to tell.
