SummerSlam just got even bigger. WWE has officially confirmed that Dominik Mysterio will defend his Intercontinental Championship against AJ Styles at the event. The announcement came after weeks of back-and-forth antics, mind games, and one final push by Raw GM Adam Pearce to get the match locked in.
Dominik had been ducking the challenge, claiming he wasn’t cleared to compete. Styles, never one to take a lie lying down, disguised himself multiple times to chase Dom around backstage. Pearce finally forced Dominik to take a medical evaluation and when the test was done, Pearce made it official: the Intercontinental Title will be on line at SummerSlam.
Styles vs. Mysterio: Experience vs. Chaos
This is more than just a title defense. It's a chance for AJ Styles to grab gold again after a stretch of being underused, and an opportunity for Dominik to prove he’s more than a sideshow villain. Styles brings calm precision. Dominik brings chaos. That contrast is what makes this matchup intriguing.
The SummerSlam card is already stacked. Cena and Rhodes are set for a Street Fight for the Undisputed Title. Gunther faces CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship. Becky Lynch is going to war with Lyra Valkyria in a no-rules brawl for Women’s Intercontinental Title. Now, with Styles and Mysterio added to the mix, the event feels complete.
Dominik’s run since WrestleMania has been loud, obnoxious, and sometimes sloppy but he’s kept belt. He retained at Money in the Bank and has been dodging Styles ever since. But now, he can’t hide.
Styles, meanwhile, has been biding his time. He knows what it takes to steal show. He’s not here for drama he’s here for the title. And this might be his last big run at the top of WWE’s midcard division.
