Kofi Kingston talks about how CM Punk helped him

The second reign of Kofi Kingston as Raw Tag Team Champion, which lasted 483 days (from 23 August 2015 to 18 December 2016) is the longest in the history of the title, succeeding in the decade (2010–2019), on an equal footing with The Miz, win multiple titles (14).

Kingston spent much of his first few years in WWE on the mid-card singles scene, during which he became a four-time Intercontinental Champion and the three-time United States Champion. In 2014, Kingston formed The New Day with Big E and Xavier Woods.

The trio went on to break the record for the longest Tag Team Championship reign in WWE history when they held the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship from August 2015 to December 2016, while defending the titles under the Freebird rule.

All totalled, Kingston is an 11-time Tag Team Champion in WWE. In April 2019, Kingston defeated Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35 to win the WWE Championship, marking his first world title and giving him a total of 19 championships in WWE.

Kofi Kingston on CM Punk

On the latest Swerve City Podcast, he talked about how CM Punk helped him: “So again, like Punk too — one of the guys in the industry who I would consider to be my brother. You know, [he] helped me out when he didn’t need to help me out.

Again, like a point in time where people were more about keeping other people down and their spots being taken. "And I remember, I’m about to go out for my debut and I’m sitting there doing push-ups. And I see a set of wrestling shoes at my feet, at my head or whatever.

So I look up, and there’s Punk. And he’s like, ‘Oh, you know, just remember, they’re out here to see you.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay.’ And that kinda eased my nerves going out there.

But he didn’t have to say that to me." Kofi Kingston, finally added, "And then we became Tag Team Champions and I learned so much. ’cause at the time, he was [ECW] Champion. And a lot of gripes and everything that you have on the undercard, sometimes you have on the top, you know? And I’m like, ‘Oh, man.

He’s going through a lot of the same stuff that I’m going through.’ Fast forward to being WWE Champion, I was already prepared to go through whatever it is that I needed to go through and fight”.
