According to a few reports, Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wanted to hold a Queen of The Ring Tournament this year. The rumors state that the Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wants to nix the Mae Young Classic Tournament.
However, the rumors were actually incorrect, and the Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) will continue holding the Mae Young Classic Tournament as they regularly do. The WWE, however, has no plans of holding the third Mae Young Classic tournament this year.
The first edition of the Mae Young Classic was held in 2017 with Kairi Sane winning the crown against Shayna Baszler. In 2018, Toni Storm won the Mae Young Classic's second edition defeating Io Shirai. The third edition initially planned for November 2019 were cancelled.
The WWE definitely had plans to hold the Queen of the Ring Tournament this year though. According to the Wrestling Observer Live, the Queen of The Ring Tournament was supposed to be held this summer. WWE had to cancel the plans due to the pandemic.
WWE Possible Queen of The Ring Plans
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter actually reported that the WWE wanted to hold the event in 2019. They had planned for that in 2018. The QQTR would have all the main roster female wrestlers.
That would have been followed by an Evolution PPV. WWE superstar Bayley, who is the current WWE Women's Tag Team Champion and SmackDown Women's Champion also made a comment during the King of the Ring Tournament in which she stated that the women wanted a tournament that would rival the King of The Ring Tournament.
"When you're a fan like me who has watched for years, it was something that was taken away. It was like, 'Dang. That was one of the coolest shows.' There's so much pressure on all the guys. There's so much history to it.
The fact that they brought it back is a dream come true for a lot of those guys. We kinda want a Queen of the Ring. If you guys could make that happen, I would love that," she said. We do not know whether or not The QOTR tournament will actually be held or not. During the pandemic, it is not really a good idea. WWE seems to be very serious about holding the tournament though.
