John Cena has been WWE's top man for over 10 years. A great protagonist of the Ruthless Aggression Era first and of the PG Era then. There have always been conflicting rumors about his backstage behavior, such as the one that he voluntarily blocked Alex Riley's push, the one that saw him reluctant to grant the job to The Rock at WrestleMania 28, in 2012, but many have.
defined an impeccable professional. Of this opinion is the former United States Champion Apollo Crews who, interviewed on After the Bell, explained how John Cena helped him find his dimension: "When I first arrived on the main roster John was still working full time and always gave me advice.
He took me aside and encouraged me to understand my character and find a dimension that suited my abilities. I was very generic at the time. I worked hard, but nobody knew what my character was."
Apollo Crews avoided talking to John Cena
Apollo Crews then added: "Many times I couldn't answer him and avoided him so as not to feel embarrassed.
It took me literally six years to improve and express my potential. But I can do even better." It is not the first time that the former champion has admitted his desire to improve. In a recent interview, in fact, he had revealed that he wanted to improve at the microphone, a deficiency that has plagued him for years.
A goal to be achieved also for all the people who have always supported him. Since October, Apollo has been part of the SmackDown roster because of the draft and has even obtained a victory against former Royal Rumble winner Shinsuke Nakamura, passing through the ranks of the bad guys for the first time in his career.
Returning to John Cena, however, there were many hoping to see him again in action for this year's edition of WrestleMania, but his commitments in Hollywood will not allow him to be present. The 16-time world champion, in fact, is currently filming the TV series "The Peacemaker" in Canada, brushing aside rumors of his return.
Although John Cena is one of WWE’s most experienced Superstars, Apollo Crews said he tried to avoid the 16-time World Champion backstage. He explained that he knew Cena would ask the question every time they spoke, but he never had an answer for him.
“I couldn’t answer him to save my life. It literally took me six years, I’m trying to figure out who is Apollo Crews. I didn’t know. I felt so embarrassed, to the point where I’d avoid trying to have conversations with him because I’m like, ‘I know he’s gonna ask me again today and I don’t have an answer for him.’” While Crews continues to appear on SmackDown, John Cena’s WWE future remains uncertain. He recently said he will not be part of WrestleMania 37 due to his current filming commitments in Canada.
