After disappearing from the scene for a while, Pat McAfee returns to the fore with a leading role: he will be the new official SmackDown commentator. The announcement was made by the former NFL star on Twitter, then reported on the official WWE website.
His assignment will begin with tonight's episode, which airs on FOX. Alongside him, there will as always, be Michael Cole, who has been promoted to VP of air announce talent for months. Pat McAfee's comment: "I have always admired WWE for its ability to create great entertainment and connect with people around the world.
It represents a special and unique world. I have had the fortune and the honor of working in various professions, but working with WWE has been my dream for years. I am grateful for the opportunity granted me to sit at the comment table where, before me, there have been real legends of this business.
I will do everything to deserve my place."
Pat McAfee is not WWE’s only new announcer
Pat McAfee amazed fans and insiders with his performance within the yellow show, having also taken part in the WarGames against the Undisputed Era and then clashed in a single match with Adam Cole.
Within NXT, according to him, he enjoyed full creative freedom. His last appearance of him dates back to a pre-recorded video in February, where he bragged about having seen right on the true nature of Adam Cole following his turn heel in TakeOver Vengeance.
A few months ago there were rumors that WWE was planning to fire him, but it didn't. Yesterday, however, the annual wave of layoffs that saw Samoa Joe, recently appeared at WrestleMania, caused a sensation. Raw's commentary team has also been revolutionized, with Adnan Virk taking over from Tom Philips, joined by Corey Graves and Byron Saxton.
Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, and Samoa Joe worked as the WWE RAW announce team in the build-up to WrestleMania 37. On WWE SmackDown, Michael Cole called the in-ring action alongside Corey Graves. The post-WrestleMania 37 episode of WWE RAW saw Graves and Saxton work alongside Adnan Virk as the show’s new commentary trio.
Meanwhile, WWE SmackDown is now set to feature the team of Cole and Pat McAfee at the announce table. In 2019, Michael Cole and Pat McAfee famously became involved in a backstage row before WrestleMania 35 due to McAfee’s decision to wear jorts. The 33-year-old said he almost walked out of the event after Cole yelled at him in front of co-workers.
