Like Thunder, SmackDown! it was televised on Thursdays. The program reached peaks of popularity that prompted rival WWF World Championship Wrestling to move Thunder to Wednesdays in hopes of maintaining ratings.

From 1999 to 2005 and again from 2015 to 2016, it was generally recorded on Tuesday evenings and broadcast on Thursdays of the same week. Instead from 2005 to 2015 it was broadcast every Thursday evening. It has occasionally been taped since August 2011 on the Monday before or after the broadcast of Raw, then known as the Raw SuperShow. From July 2016 to September 2019, it aired live every Tuesday night as SmackDown Live. Since October 2020 it goes live every Friday night.

Since January 25, 2008, the broadcasts of the program have been in HD and for the occasion a new common set was created for the then three rosters (Raw, SmackDown and ECW).
