Nxt Cruiserweight Championship

The NXT Cruiserweight Championship was a professional wrestling title owned by WWE from 2016 to 2022, reserved exclusively for wrestlers weighing no more than 93 kg.

Initially created for the lightweight division of Raw, with the name of WWE Cruiserweight Championship, the title was awarded on September 14, 2016 as a prize for the winner of the Cruiserweight Classic tournament, namely TJ Perkins. Later, in 2019, the title became exclusive to NXT.

The Cruiserweight Classic tournament included wrestlers whose weight did not exceed 93 kg and included many wrestlers from all parts of the world and from various federations, and ended on September 14, 2016, with the victory of TJ Perkins over Gran Metalik. In addition to winning the tournament trophy, Perkins was awarded the WWE Cruiserweight Championship belt by Triple H, thus becoming the inaugural champion. Subsequently the title and the entire lightweight division were assigned to the Raw roster.

The title, when known as the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, was different from the previous title of the same name which originated in World Championship Wrestling in 1991 and was retired in 2007 under the WWE umbrella. In fact, even though the two titles had the same name they don't share the same story.

The title was first defended at an NXT TakeOver on October 4, 2020 at NXT TakeOver: 31, when interim champion Santos Escobar retained the belt by defeating Isaiah Swerve Scott.

Subsequently, Devlin defended the title at NXT UK and Escobar at the same time at NXT, and on the March 17, 2021 episode, Devlin returned to the United States, announcing that he was the rightful NXT Cruiserweight Champion; Escobar subsequently retorted that the rightful and undisputed champion would be decided in a ladder match on the second night of NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver on April 8, 2021. The match was eventually won by Escobar, who became the undisputed champion .

On January 4, 2022, during the NXT New Year's Evil special episode, Carmelo Hayes defeated Roderick Strong by unifying the NXT Cruiserweight Championship he just won with the NXT North American Championship he already held, retiring the lightweight belt.
