Triple H and WWE management surprised everyone in the early part of this year with a really risky move. They decided to turn John Cena into a heel for the first time in his long career, after the leader of the 'Cenation' had represented the babyface par excellence of the company becoming popular in every corner of the planet thanks to his gimmick.
The veteran from Boston accepted this idea and proved to be a true champion in every way, giving his best on every single occasion and increasing his appearances in WWE shows. John's farewell tour has certainly not disappointed expectations so far, indeed it has given several memorable moments that will remain forever etched in the memory of fans.
He also accomplished one of his greatest goals by becoming world champion for the 17th time at WrestleMania 41, where he dethroned 'The American Nightmare' Cody Rhodes thanks to a stellar performance in Las Vegas. Cena later defended his belt from the onslaught of other veterans such as Randy Orton and CM Punk, who had the chance to work with him at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia just over a month ago.
The Game opens up on John Cena
As was quite predictable, the 17-time world champion will be one of the protagonists of SummerSlam, the PLE that will be staged at the MetLife Stadium today and tomorrow.
Although the retirement tour of the leader of the 'Cenation' has not yet ended, it is safe to say that the choice of the WWE management to propitiate his heel turn was correct.
During an interview with 'The Sports Agents', The Game finally broke silence on John Cena’s heel turn: “When it was brought up, he was the first one to say, ‘Oh my god, I love that. It’s… man, I can creatively sink my teeth into that and have fun and do something different.’ Obviously limited by the John Cena that we have today and his physical limitations versus one 20 years ago, but that is what was intriguing about it. And for fans, it was a different ride. For fans, it was something new and fresh and intriguing.”
