Gunther had recovered the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Jey Uso on Raw earlier this summer, but he couldn't do anything to avoid losing to a legend like CM Punk in the main event of SummerSlam (Night 1) and realized that he still has to improve a lot to become an icon of this business.
Despite the loss against the 'Second City Saint' in the most important PLE of the summer, no one can deny that 'The Ring General' has been the protagonist of a truly impressive rise in the last year and a half and there is a feeling that he has several margins for improvement still.
He was also Bill Goldberg's opponent in the final match of the latter's career, which took place during Saturday Night's Main Event in Atlanta on July 12. According to some rumors from authoritative insiders, Triple H and the WWE management have already identified him as John Cena's last opponent before his retirement in mid-December.
The Undertaker pays tribute to Gunther
Thanks to his attitude both in and out of the ring, Gunther conquered the WWE Universe and gained recognition from many wrestling legends.
Among these, there is also The Undertaker. On the latest episode of the 'Six Feet Under' podcast, the 'Deadman' revealed when he became a huge fan of Gunther: "It was so easy to follow. Sheamus, he has that aura about him. He wants to get into a fight, and then here's somebody that's actually able to bring it to him. Man, it was so good, and that's when I became a fan of yours and really started paying attention. Then, obviously, at that point everything's really starting to take off for you within WWE."
'The Ring General' immediately replied: "I would say that was like the first big pay-per-view singles match that got real traction. Stood out big time. It was really good. The set-up was good. It was in Europe, in Wales, so they were really behind Sheamus, and Sheamus is a great opponent too."
